i-wine: 4 May i-1-wine journey 16 (I WANT WINE!)

Great afternoon with a group of 8 for our Wine Journey class. Class started with the private wine cellar tour. Everyone was impressed with the design and collection here. Prakash was explaining how a Musigny that comes from a different area is priced differently.

Continued with a short theory session, covering the basis of wine knowledge and tasting.
This session give an idea on:

  • How long has man been drinking wine.
  • How to differentiate Old World and New World wine.
  • Varieties of grape and name in different region.
  • How to read a wine bottle label.
  • How to open a bottle of sparkling and wine.
  • How to store a bottle of wine after opened and how many days it can last.

Then we moved on with the tutored wine tasting, participants learning how to pour wine and a demo of opening a bottle sparkling wine.

....sip, smell, taste, everyone started to talk and comment on the wine (they are so shy and quiet during the theory, looks like its an alcohol effect...ha!)

Vanilla, flora, cassis, berries, spicy, oaky..... participants are encouraged to comment their thoughts on the wine.

Tasted a total of 8 wines and here are the victims

  1. NV Renaixenia Cava Brut
  2. 2011 Pasqua Pinot Grigio/Garganega
  3. 2011 Finca Flichman Roble Chardonnay
  4. 2011 Hugel Gewurztraminer
  5. 2011 Robertson Pinot Noir
  6. 2011 Santa Rita 120 Cabernet Sauvignon
  7. 2011 Bird In Hand Shiraz
  8. Brown Brother Muscat & Flora 2012

Questions asked during the class include:

1) Why the cellar is already cold and we still need wine fridges?
2) What is the difference between Vineyards and Winery?
3) Does cork, synthetic cork, or screwcap make a difference?

Great learning experience, and it doesn't end here.
