Bordeaux Master Class (15 February 2014)

Here's a round-up of the private Bordeaux Master Class, a relaxed afternoon tasting attended by 9 wine lovers.

Tasted more than what we expected, a total of 9 bottles of lovely Bordeaux continue with a dinner at the price RM250 per person (price depends on the wine selection), we are looking forward to held more private classes like this.

Glen Carlou Grand Classique 2009
Glen Carlou, Paarl in South Africa
Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot

Balanced with nice complexity and decent legth. Predominantly cassis with some tobacco and smokey and tar-like notes.

Fonreaud Cru Bourgeois Listrac-Médoc 1998
Château Fonréaud,Médoc in France
Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Ratings: 4.2 stars; 90pts

Mellow and plush cassis. Nice depth, some complexity, soft tannins.

Chasse-Spleen Moulis En Médoc 2001
Chateau Chasse-Spleen, Médoc in France
Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Ratings: 3.6stars; 90pts

Deep cassis and tobacco notes seduce. Tannins need some air to soften but overall a plrasing wine with good maturity.

Chateau la Tour Carnet Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2006
Chateau la Tour Carnet, Haut-Médoc in France
Main Variental: Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Ratings: 4.1 stars; 89pts

A good bordeaux though not particularly intense or complex. Almost mature but not sure if further development of secondary notes would counter-balance further loss of fruit.

Chateau la Tour Carnet Haut-Médoc Grand Cru Classé 2009
Chateau la Tour Carnet, Haut-Médoc in France
Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Ratings: 3.9 stars; 90pts

Intense cassis, bit tight for 2009. Overextraction? Nice oak and complexity. Next day still showing well but looses structure after a bit.

Fieuzal Pessac-Leognan Vin De Graves Grand Cru Classe 2009

Chateau de Fieuzal, Graves in France
Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot
Ratings: 3.8stars; 91pts

Balance immaculate. Not a show wine but one for the afficionado. Round, drinking well. Fruit overshining the Fieuzal minerality.
Drank better second day but gravelly notes still distant. Balanced by a skilled winemaker and a good dancer.

Bernadotte Haut-Médoc Grand Vin 2010
Chateau Bernadotte, Médoc in France
Main Varietal: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot
Ratings: 3.5 stars; 89-91pts

Cassis and a hint of mocha.  Tad overoaked but gives rise to hope for the patient. 5.12.15.7=89.
Next day lot more open and rich. Should drink well from 2018.
rescore: 5.13.16.7=91

Garcin Haut-Bergey Pessac-Léognan 2006
Vignobles Garcin, Libournais in France
Main Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon
Ratings: 3.7 stars; 91pts

Seductive secondary notes dominated by a sweet tobacco note. Soft textured.

Garcin Château Haut-Bergey Pessac-Léognan 2010
Vignobles Garcin, Graves in France

Main Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Ratings: 3.9 stars; 91pts

Rich but still closed. Cassis underscored by lovely oak. Balanced and with great ageing potential.
Next day depth more apparent. Oppulent presentation. Should start to really show its colours 2019 onwards.
